Collecting FAQ

Getting started with Pokemon card collecting, what to collect, and how to protect your cards.

How do I start collecting Pokemon cards?

Start by deciding what interests you: completing a specific set, collecting your favorite Pokemon, chasing rare artwork, or building competitive decks. Buy a few booster packs or a booster box to get started, and use penny sleeves to protect your cards from day one.

What should I collect — singles or sealed product?

For specific cards, buying singles from TCGPlayer is almost always cheaper than opening packs. For the thrill of opening and building a collection, booster boxes offer the best pack-to-price ratio. Many collectors do both: buy singles for specific wants and open packs for fun.

How should I store my Pokemon cards?

All cards should be in penny sleeves at minimum. Valuable cards go in penny sleeves plus toploaders. Use side-loading binder pages for set collections. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid basements and attics due to humidity and temperature swings.

Are booster packs worth buying?

From a pure value standpoint, the expected value of a booster pack is usually less than its retail price. However, packs are fun to open and occasionally contain chase cards worth far more than the pack cost. Buy packs for entertainment, buy singles for specific cards.

What are the rarest Pokemon cards in modern sets?

In Scarlet & Violet era sets, the rarest cards are Special Art Rares (SAR), Illustration Rares (IR), and Hyper Rares. These appear roughly once every 1-3 booster boxes. Gold Secret Rares are also highly sought after.
