Card Grading FAQ

Understanding professional card grading — PSA, CGC, BGS — and when it's worth grading your cards.

What is Pokemon card grading?

Card grading is a service where professionals evaluate your card's condition and assign a numerical grade (1-10). The card is then sealed in a tamper-proof case (slab) that displays the grade. Graded cards are easier to buy and sell because the condition is independently verified.

What is the difference between PSA, CGC, and BGS?

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the most popular and widely recognized for Pokemon cards. CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) offers half-point grades and subgrades at lower prices. BGS (Beckett Grading Services) provides four subgrades and the coveted Black Label 10. PSA generally commands the highest resale premiums.

Is it worth grading my Pokemon card?

Grading is worth it if: the card is valuable enough that a high grade significantly increases its price, the card appears to be in mint/near-mint condition, and the potential value increase outweighs the grading cost ($15-150+ per card). A good rule: if grading costs are more than 10% of the expected graded value, skip it.

How long does Pokemon card grading take?

Turnaround times vary by service level. Economy tiers take 3-6 months, standard tiers take 1-3 months, and express/premium tiers take 1-4 weeks. Faster service costs significantly more per card.

What grade is considered good for a Pokemon card?

A PSA 9 (Mint) or PSA 10 (Gem Mint) are considered excellent grades that command premium prices. PSA 8 (Near Mint-Mint) is solid for older vintage cards. Below PSA 7, the grading premium diminishes significantly for most cards.
