How to Build a Pokemon TCG Deck

Building a strong Pokemon TCG deck is about consistency, synergy, and having a clear strategy. Every deck is exactly 60 cards, and you can include up to 4 copies of any card with the same name (except Basic Energy, which is unlimited).

A typical competitive deck follows a rough ratio: 12-18 Pokemon, 28-36 Trainer cards, and 8-14 Energy cards. The exact numbers depend on your strategy, but this ratio ensures you draw the right mix of cards throughout a game.

Start with your main attacker — the Pokemon your deck is built around. This could be a powerful Pokemon ex, a fast single-prize attacker, or a combo-oriented Pokemon. Then add supporting Pokemon that set up your strategy, draw cards, or provide useful Abilities.

Trainer cards are the engine of your deck. Include draw Supporters like Professor's Research and Iono to keep your hand full. Add search Items like Nest Ball, Ultra Ball, and Rare Candy to find key Pokemon. Include switching cards like Switch and Escape Rope to manage your Active Pokemon.

Energy should match your attackers. Most decks run one or two Energy types. Include enough Energy that you can consistently attach to your attackers, but not so much that you draw too many. Special Energy cards like Double Turbo Energy can accelerate your setup.

Test your deck by playing games and tracking what goes wrong. If you brick (draw unplayable hands), you need more draw Supporters or search cards. If you run out of attackers, add more Pokemon. If you never have enough Energy, increase your count. Iteration is the key to a strong deck.
