Pokemon TCG Energy Types Explained

Energy cards are the fuel that powers your Pokemon's attacks in the Pokemon TCG. There are 11 basic Energy types, each corresponding to a Pokemon type: Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, Darkness, Metal, Dragon, Fairy, and Colorless.

Grass Energy powers Grass-type Pokemon, which often feature healing and status condition attacks. Fire Energy fuels Fire-type Pokemon known for high-damage attacks, though they sometimes discard Energy as a cost. Water Energy supports Water-type Pokemon, which tend to have solid damage output and Energy manipulation abilities.

Lightning Energy powers Lightning-type Pokemon, often featuring self-damage or coin-flip mechanics for big rewards. Psychic Energy fuels Psychic-type Pokemon that specialize in damage spread, hand disruption, and special conditions. Fighting Energy drives Fighting-type Pokemon with hard-hitting attacks and damage boosts.

Darkness Energy powers Darkness-type Pokemon, which lean into disruption and sneaky tactics. Metal Energy supports Metal-type Pokemon known for their tankiness and damage reduction. Dragon-type Pokemon are unique because they typically require two different types of Energy to attack, making them harder to set up but very powerful.

Fairy Energy was used for Fairy-type Pokemon before the type was removed from the TCG in 2020. Existing Fairy cards are now treated as Psychic. Colorless Energy requirements on attack costs can be paid with any type of Energy, making Colorless Pokemon the most flexible to splash into any deck.

Beyond Basic Energy, Special Energy cards provide bonus effects — extra damage, healing, or type flexibility. Cards like Double Turbo Energy, Reversal Energy, and Jet Energy have defined competitive metagames. You can only include up to 4 copies of each Special Energy in a deck.
