Pokemon TCG Win Conditions
There are exactly three ways to win a game of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Understanding each win condition helps you plan your strategy and recognize when you are winning or losing.
Win Condition 1: Take all six Prize cards. At the start of the game, each player sets aside six cards face-down as Prizes. Every time you knock out an opposing Pokemon, you take one or more Prize cards (Pokemon ex and Pokemon V give up 2 Prizes, Pokemon VMAX give up 3). The first player to take all six wins.
Win Condition 2: Knock out all of your opponent's Pokemon. If your opponent has no Pokemon left in play — no Active Pokemon and no Benched Pokemon — you win immediately, even if you haven't taken all your Prize cards. This is sometimes called 'benching out' your opponent.
Win Condition 3: Your opponent cannot draw. At the start of each turn, the active player must draw one card. If their deck is empty and they cannot draw, they lose. This is called 'decking out.' Some decks intentionally try to force the opponent to draw through their deck as a win strategy.
In competitive play, most games are decided by Prize cards. However, aggressive decks sometimes win by benching out opponents who can't set up enough Pokemon, and control decks sometimes win by decking out opponents through Resource management and disruption.
Understanding Prize math is crucial. If your opponent has three Pokemon ex in play, that's 6 Prizes if you knock them all out — a complete win. But if they have single-prize attackers, you need to knock out six of them. Many competitive strategies revolve around manipulating Prize trades to come out ahead.
